🧊Are We Still Frozen?
Hey friend,
We are exactly 12 days away from the official end of the federal hiring freeze.
Starting July 16th, we should see a lot of federal agencies posting job announcements a lot more.
As we are waiting, remember there are some key exceptions, including: military, national security, immigration enforcement, and public safety.
We are also expecting a limited hiring under the 1-for-4 rule. Meaning agencies are generally not able to hire more than 1 person for every 4 that leave the agency.
Also, we might not see an instant hiring surge take place this month. More than likely many federal hiring actions will be deferred to the fall, after the end of this fiscal year.
Today we are seeing over 6,000 open jobs on USAJobs under “Open to the Public”. This is higher than the last few months.
We can also see over 8,000 open jobs under “Federal Employees”, meaning you are already in the government.
I believe that at a minimum we will see a 20 to 25% increase to both of these numbers by the end of the month. However, that will still be a lot lower than what we saw in 2024 or 2023.
If you’re in the hunt for a better job, now is the time to update your resume and adjust your search filters on USAJobs.
📊FedScope Data
OPM announced this week that FedScope, the federal government’s primary employment data platform, is getting a major upgrade.
If you don’t know what that is, you should check it out. You can find out all types of information that could help you make decision.
You can see how often agencies RIF their employees or you can see exactly how many people are in different job series.
So, what’s changing?
The new version of FedScope, set to launch this fall, will feature:
Interactive visuals
Detailed datasets
New tools tailored to answer the most frequently asked questions about federal employment
According to OPM, the overhaul will roll out in phases, but the goal is a complete modernization by the end of fiscal year 2025.
FedScope’s March 2025 data, recently uploaded to the legacy site, shows a net loss of about 23,000 federal employees. However, it doesn’t fully reflect larger workforce shifts:
Hundreds of thousands of workers are expected to leave in October 2025 under the Deferred Resignation Program (DRP)
Tens of thousands of RIF-targeted employees remain on the rolls due to pending court orders
In the meantime, key demographic data—including race and ethnicity—has already been removed from FedScope. This change followed President Trump’s order to eliminate all diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) programs across government.
💸Where’s my Raise?
Over 60,000 federal blue-collar workers are still waiting for their legally mandated pay raises. This is all due to a sudden advisory committee purge at the Pentagon.
In March, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth ordered a 45-day freeze on all Defense Department advisory committees, to “align with strategic priorities.” When the review ended, Hegseth dismissed every member of the Pentagon’s advisory panels, including the Department of Defense Wage Committee, which plays a big role in implementing Federal Wage System (FWS) pay increases.
Result: Pay raises for 2025 have been stalled in 87 of the 248 local wage areas, leaving roughly 60,000 federal workers unpaid at updated rates.
Who’s Affected?
Welders and machinists working on naval nuclear reactors
Maintenance staff in national parks
30,000+ VA medical center support staff
Logistics, pipefitters, mechanics, and custodians in agencies nationwide
These employees are hired under the Federal Wage System, and their annual raises are determined via local wage surveys and extrapolated from the broader federal pay increase.
For FWS workers, DoD’s wage committee must approve local adjustments. Without it:
Workers are effectively frozen out of the 2025 raise
The Pentagon is in violation of current law, according to union leaders
Agencies risk losing specialized labor to the private sector
